Surge

Surge

Surge is an optical art illusion responding to the unique context, scale and movement of Melbourne's trams. The work itself is a simple geometric abstraction - a series of high contrast black and white wavy lines causing a discordant figure-ground relationship; the result is a dynamic art work that fools the eye, appearing to move, flash, vibrate and hum.

Referencing Bridget Riley's seminal work 'Current' and acknowledging Brook Andrew's earlier commission for Melbourne Art Trams in 2013, Surge allows multiple interpretations both as a geometric abstraction and an optical illusion - an embodiment of the raw energy in electrical current surging through the wires above and the dazzle of consumer society all around.
